In many patients with cleft lip, the nose is also malformed, and this must be taken into account by the team that is treating the patient. Cleft lip can be unilateral (one-sided) or bilateral (two-sided), and nasal malformation is often coincident with breathing difficulty. Treatment of this type of patient requires special care from birth, and nasal surgery must be performed in at least two or three stages.
Nowadays with modern techniques in nasal surgery, there is increased hope for such patients to have more natural appearing noses. The method refined by Dr. Sazgar for cleft nose surgery was presented at the 20th World Congress of the International Federation of Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Societies (IFOS) in Seoul, Korea.
